Weekend Security - Paid - Part Time

  • Contract work: no benefits, no taxes withheld

  • No weapons allowed for this position and use of force cannot be used

  • Please read the security information for our building—The New Community House

  • Know how to use non-aggressive de-escalation practices

  • Be able to work on your feet with frequent walking—and be able to lift things within reasonable weights

  • Must be reliable to work every Saturday and/or Sunday—and communicate ahead of time on the rare occassion you cannot work

  • Must be comfortable speaking with a voice of authority when confronting persons who need to lower their voice or need to leave

  • Must be sensitive to the culture of Edgewater Mutual Aid—an organization that doesn’t organize using a hierarchical leadership style (it is collegial and communal) and does not have confidence in authority figures like police officers and traditional security personnel

  • Be patient and friendly with persons exhibiting behavioral issues, have dementia, or cannot understand English

  • Supervisor is Facility Manager Dwight Elmore on behalf of the Head of Staff and the church personnel committee

  • Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (3.5 hours) paid by Edgewater Mutual Aid Network

    • Help prepare common areas for food distribution by setting up chairs along the hallway;

    • Help persons needing assistance up and down the ramp—this may include walking a blind person from door to the fellowship hall and helping him go around the food distribution room before others

    • Help keep paths clear for both food pantry volunteers and beneficiaries lining up—many are senior citizens with English as a Second Language (Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Spanish);

    • Help maintain the peace among beneficiaries—reminding them to use soft voices, not to sit on stairwells, not to enter the Sanctuary or other floors of the building;

    • Guide people to the restrooms;

    • Ensure that Edgewater Mutual Aid volunteers clean up after food distribution (return fellowship hall furniture, sweep floors, fold and stack chairs);

    • Lock-up all doors after food distribution.

  • and/or Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (2.5 hours) paid by Edgewater Presbyterian Church

    • Turn on lights in the first floor common areas and Sanctuary;

    • Help Quakers using the Kenmore Ave. door if they need guidance—they are usually self-reliant and manage their own security;

    • Welcome people coming to church and ask strangers where they are going in the building (space-sharers);

    • Keep people who are not there for worship, not a space-sharer, or not guest of space-sharer out of the building.

  • $20 per hour > $70 Saturdays + $50 Sundays = $120 per weekend
