The following is a reflection on Matthew 6:1-6,16-18 as delivered to residents of Three Crowns Park, Evanston, Ill. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
Today, Jesus reminds us of something very important. We don’t need to show off to be close to God.
Sometimes people like to look holy in front of others—they pray loudly, or tell everyone when they give to the poor, or act sad when they fast. But Jesus says, “That’s not what God wants.”
God sees what we do even when no one else is watching.
He sees the quiet prayers.
He sees the simple acts of kindness.
He sees the love we carry in our hearts.
Now that we’re older, we may not be as busy or as involved as we once were.
But that’s okay!
These years are a special time.
We don’t need to prove anything.
God already knows us.
He knows our struggles, our hopes, and our love for Him.
When we sit quietly and pray…
When we forgive someone who hurt us…
When we help someone without telling anyone…
God sees it all—and He smiles.
We don’t need a stage.
We don’t need applause.
We just need to keep loving God and loving others, even in small ways.
So let us pray, give, and live not to be seen by others, but because we know God is always with us—and that’s enough.
